Neutrogena skincare review: my experience with Neutrogena skincare products, what I’ve tried and recommend.
Continuing the series of me reviewing each product I’ve tried from a brand in a single post (no. 4), I also decided to try Neutrogena skincare.
*** This post is not sponsored by Neutrogena.
Neutrogena is not a brand that I frequently reach for; nevertheless, I’ve tried a few of their fragrance-free products. It’s the old-school brand, with old-school ingredients and mainly scented. Of which I’m not a fan. However, while browsing their website, I noticed that they are introducing more new, improved formulas that are also fragrance-free, which I’m excited to try in the near future.
In this post, I will cover the products I’ve tried so far from Neutrogena and share my experience. If you are interested in trying out their products, check out my reviews below.
✨ MY 35+ SKIN PROFILE AND SKINCARE ROUTINE ✨ Skin Type: Combination skin prone to dryness, sensitivity, texture and a bit of T-zone oiliness, especially in the summer. Light skin with a cool undertone. Goals: Increasing hydration, minimizing irritations, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and texture + preventing sun damage. Skincare Routine: Love rotating skincare products, favoring retinoids for their anti-aging benefits and adjusting my routine based on the needs of my skin. Typically a maximum of 5-steps skincare routine. ✨In my skincare routine for combination skin, I go over my routine in more depth, including top product recommendations and tips. Challenges: Finding products to meet all my skin goals and needs without feeling greasy or irritating.

1. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream Fragrance-Free Review
Price: $$ | Size: 1.7 fL. oZ/ 50 mL | Best: For Combination Skin, Hydrating, Lightweight.
Key Ingredients: dimethicone, glycerin, sodium hyaluronate; fragrance-free.
I’m starting my Neutrogena review with the fragrance-free Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream, which was my first purchase from them. Strictly because I was very intrigued about it once the product went viral everywhere.
It’s a 50 mL face moisturizer containing dimethicone, glycerin, and sodium hyaluronate to hydrate the skin. With a lightweight, gel-like texture that absorbs quickly into the skin without being oily.
I love that it’s fragrance-free, making it perfect for my combination skin that is also sensitive. After using it and finishing the jar, I can say that it’s a great face moisturizer for combination skin, especially in the summer.
It works on both oily and dry areas without clogging pores. For winter though, I found it a little too light and needed to add something richer on top.
It does have a somewhat silky finish from dimethicone. The finish is a little bit similar to the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream that I reviewed in my CeraVe review – that matte silky finish with no glow.
Overall, I liked it – I think it’s great – a little bit too basic in ingredients for what I prefer, though.
I wish they had added more beneficial ingredients considering the price, like ceramides for barrier repair, for example. Hyaluronic acid just adds hydration together with glycerin and dimethicone. Which is a good thing. But it’s very basic and pretty much in everything these days.
But it’s just me and my thoughts. You may find this gel cream lovely, if you are looking for something simple and effective to daily moisturize your skin without oiliness or irritation. If you have combination skin, this will work for both oily and dry areas.
✨Pro Tip: Try using a richer moisturizer on top for longer-lasting hydration and to minimize the appearance of fine lines. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream does not have occlusives, therefore adding anything richer can double its benefits.
2. Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream Fragrance-Free Review
Price: $ | Size: 16 fL. oZ/ 453 g | Best: Lightweight, Hydrating, All Skin Types.
Key Ingredients: glycerin, petrolatum, dimethicone, sodium hyaluronate; fragrance-free.
Continuing, since I tried the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream, why not try the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream, which is also fragrance-free.
With this one, I was curious if it would perform as well as the hydro boost gel cream in the tiny jar, as everyone, especially dermatologists, recommended for use on the face and body.
It contains ingredients that are similar to those found in water gel cream, as well as petrolatum. Feels slightly richer on the skin, with the same matte silky finish and no glow. There’s no tackiness or fragrance.
For the body, I found it great for the summer, when I prefer a more lightweight hydrating moisturizer that does not feel oily. It delivers sufficient hydration and feels good on the skin.
For the face on my combination skin, however, I did not find it as good as it tended to sting a little on some days – which is weird given that there is nothing in the ingredients I’m sensitive to. My best guess here is that my skin is more sensitive some days and cannot tolerate anything.
Overall, yet again – a simple and hydrating body moisturizer with hyaluronic acid and a matte silky finish to hydrate the skin.
To be completely honest, I’m still working with myself to finish it. I’ll probably finish it this summer. I find it too simplistic for my needs.
On the body, I have texturized skin, and simple ingredients like hyaluronic acid + petrolatum does not seem to help much. I prefer the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cream with urea and salicylic acid as it’s both moisturizing and smoothing.

3. Neutrogena Deep Moisture Hypoallergenic Body Lotion Review
Price: $ | Size: / fL. oZ/ 400 mL | Best: Hydrating, Lightweight, Dry – Sensitive Skin, Hyaluronic Acid- Free.
Key Ingredients: glycerin, petrolatum, dimethicone, vitamin E; fragrance-free.
Last but not least, I tried Neutrogena Deep Moisture Hypoallergenic Body Lotion, which is also fragrance-free.
Do you notice anything about the key ingredients? They are similar to everything I have tried in this Neutrogena skincare review. Glycerin, petrolatum, and dimethicone. Minus hyaluronic acid.
This lotion, though, feels richer on the skin compared to Neutrogena Hydro Boost Body Gel Cream. With a more natural glow finish, but not overly glowy. It feels more moisturizing on the skin and works well in both summer and winter, especially on drier skin types. Completely fragrance-free.
Also, the texture is cremier and slightly thicker, and it absorbs easily with no residue or greasy feel.
I liked it more, and I have left a couple more pumps before finishing it. I used this one purely for body application, rotating it with my other body lotions.
All I can say is that it’s a hyaluronic acid-free body lotion that moisturizes well. If you are sensitive to hyaluronic acid or fragrance and have dry skin, it may be an excellent option to consider.
Neutrogena Skincare Products I Recommend
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream Fragrance-Free and Neutrogena Deep Moisture Hypoallergenic Body Lotion Fragrance-Free are my top recommendations from Neutrogena.
The Hydro Boost Gel Cream offers a refreshing, lightweight moisturization with its fast-absorbing gel texture, while the Deep Moisture Hypoallergenic Body Lotion provides a more rich hydration without hyaluronic acid.
Depending on your texture and hydration preferences, both are great options to consider.
Also, the prices are reasonable. Maybe hydro-boost gel cream is a touch pricey for the 50 mL vs. ingredients, but we can’t have everything. Ingredients, simplicity, quantity and low prices. 😊
